The Bows & Barrels 4-H Club competed successfully in a number of New Jersey 4-H Shooting Sports competitions. The club’s members did extremely well! Some have qualified to participate in the national competition. Congratulations to all the members of Bow & Barrels on their achievements!

Changes to the 4-H Volunteer Appointment Process

Volunteers are truly the heart of 4-H. They dedicate their time, talent and personal resources to make a difference in the lives of New Jersey 4-H members.

The New Jersey 4-H Youth Development program is committed to offering high quality educational experiences for young people. Effective Fall 2014, the 4-H Volunteer Appointment Process will include criminal background checks and youth protection training. This process has been designed for the purpose of protecting the young people served by the New Jersey 4-H program as well as volunteers, employees and Rutgers Cooperative Extension.

Current 4-H volunteers will need to complete a background check and the Rutgers Protection of Minors training. Current volunteers will receive updates from the County 4-H office with more information and instructions. New volunteers will complete these requirements during their initial appointment process.

More information will be provided to current and prospective volunteers in the near future.

2014 4-H Wreath Sale Fundraiser

graphic of holiday wreathIt may seem too early to be thinking of holiday wreaths, but that time is quickly approaching.
We would appreciate the participation of 4-H clubs and members in the Annual Wreath Sale. This will be the only fundraiser conducted by the 4-H Foundation this year.

Funds support…

4-H Foundation Scholarship

Last year the Foundation awarded 18 scholarships. The cost for these exceeded profits from the wreath sale. In order to continue the current level of funding for scholarships ($500), it’s important the 4-H community supports this sale.

National 4-H Events

A number of our 4-H members have qualified to participate or compete in national 4-H events. Funding from the Foundation helps members offset the costs to participate in these events.

Additionally, participating 4-H clubs will receive $1 for each 12” wreath (decorated or undecorated) and $5 for each 36” wreath sold. The more you sell the more money each club earns.

Thanks  for participating in this year’s wreath sale and helping to raise funds to support the growth and education of our members!

Wreath order forms to due at the 4-H Office by Friday, November 14.

Wreath pickup will be Saturday, November 22 from 9-11 at the Shotwell Building.

2014 Newton Holiday Parade

Sussex County 4-H Clubs are invited to participate in the Town of Newton’s Annual Holiday Parade, sponsored by the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce.

The theme for this year’s parade will be Christmas through the Ages, Celebrating Newton’s 150th Anniversary.
Awards will be given for the floats and/or group who best depict the theme. Please be advised that floats must arrive by 8:30 AM.

All floats will enter Lower Spring Street via Diller Ave. Judging will take place before the parade so that as participants reach the reviewing stand we can announce the winners. If your float is not in place by the 8:30 AM deadline it will not be judged.
All marchers should arrive between 8:30 and 9:30 AM at the Lower Spring Street staging area. Lower Spring Street will be open for you to drop marchers off but you will not be allowed to park vehicles there. Be advised that the staging area will be blocked off to all vehicular traffic.
Further information about where you can park will be sent after you have registered to march in the parade.
Musical groups, floats, animals and vehicles such as antique cars are welcome to participate. If you are interested in building a float there are several supply and informational sites available on the web.

The NJ Agricultural Fair Ambassador competition is coming up on Sunday, Nov. 2. Each year the Agricultural Division of the New Jersey State Fair®/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show sends a nominee to participate in the competition. Last year, our representative, Kayla Vaughan, was the winner and became the NJ Agricultural Fair Ambassador. The Ag Ambassadors are expected to attend the NJ Agriculture Convention in February to represent their respective Fair.

In order to compete, the representative must be a single male or female between 16-21 years of age, and will be required to submit an application, resume and essay and will need to give a short speech at the competition. Contestants will be judged on their presence, their public speaking and knowledge of New Jersey’s agriculture and its agricultural fairs.

Joan Smith, President of the Ag Division of the Fair, will be accepting letters of interest from anyone who would like to be the Ambassador for the NJ State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show.

If you are interested in representing the NJSF/SCFHS at NJ Ag Convention, please send a letter by email to Mrs. Smith at jbsmith11@embarqmail.com.

In the letter please detail the reasons why you would be a good ambassador for agriculture in Sussex County and our Fair.

The deadline for the letter is September 25.

The Ag Division officers will review the letters and choose a representative.

Fall 2014 Tractor Supply Company–Paper Clover Campaign

Tractor Supply Company logoThe fall 2014 4-H Paper Clover Campaign in partnership with Tractor Supply Company (TSC) will take place from October 8-19th. This event marks the 4th year of collaboration between the organizations on the national in-store fundraiser, benefiting state and local 4 H programming in each of the communities where a TSC or Del’s Farm and Feed Supply store is located.

The spring 2014 4-H Paper Clover Campaign will take place October 8-19th. Shoppers at the Sussex store will have the opportunity to support 4-H in Sussex County by choosing to purchase paper clovers for a $1 or more at checkout. All funds raised will be donated to 4-H, and will support 4-H activities in Sussex County.

In just four years, across 48 states, the TSC 4-H Paper Clover Campaign has provided more than $3.3 million to 4-H across the country. All proceeds raised directly benefit 4-H, with 70 percent of funds being returned to state and local 4-H programs. The effort has provided direct support for local camps, after-school programs and other activities, and has granted scholarships to these events that youth can explore their interests in everything from animal science to robotics.

“Our Paper Clover efforts are one of the key ways our stores can give back to the community,” said John Wendler, senior vice president of Marketing for Tractor Supply Company. “By providing essential funding for hundreds of thousands of 4-H young people, we are able to support local organizations that are important to both our customer and our Team Members. We’re proud to help improve the many communities in which we have stores through our partnership with 4-H.That is what Tractor Supply is all about.”

New Jersey Equine Advisory Board Announces $1,000 Scholarship

NJ Equine Advisory Board logoThe New Jersey Equine Advisory Board has announced a $1,000 scholarship to help 4-H and FFA members pursue their equine activities. Members of organizations represented on the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board are also eligible. Applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 16 and reside in the State of New Jersey.

The Sara Dubinin Scholarship, in memory of Sara Dubinin, who loved horses, will be presented at the New Jersey Bred Equine Breeder Awards Luncheon on January 25, 2015 At Charley’s Other Brother Restaurant in Eastampton.

Sara, a Sayreville resident, graduated from Cardinal McCarrick High School in South Amboy in 2006. The 19-year-old was attending Middlesex County College when she succumbed to injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident in September of 2007.

Those interested in receiving the scholarship must submit an application form including an essay on, “How horses have affected my life and how horses figure into my future.” The application can be found at www.jerseyequine.nj.gov/dubininapplicationform.pdf. Consideration of applications will be weighted upon the candidate’s financial need.

New Jersey Agricultural Achievement Award

NJ Department of Agriculture logoNew Jersey residents who are entering their senior year in high school this fall and are planning a career in agriculture or science may apply for the New Jersey Agricultural Achievement Award.  One winner will be selected and awarded a scholarship to honor their achievements.

The New Jersey Agricultural Achievement Award, sponsored by Dr. Amy Butewicz, a former New Jersey Equestrian of the Year, was started because of her desire to give back to the community. Worth $500, this scholarship is meant to assist its recipient in beginning their future in agriculture.

The qualifications for receiving this award include submitting an application, found here www.jerseyequine.nj.gov/agachievementapplform.pdf, a resume along with an essay answering the question, “How has your involvement within your respective nominating organization helped to shape your future career choice?”

In addition, a contestant is required to be a current, active member of an organization either on the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board and/or represented at the Youth Reception portion of the New Jersey State Agricultural Convention.  Each organization on the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board and a participant of the State Agricultural Convention is able to nominate a maximum of two contestants.

The winner of the Agricultural Achievement Award must attend the Annual New Jersey Bred Equine Breeders Award Luncheon to be held on Sunday, January 26, 2015 in Eastampton and will read his or her essay to the attendees.

Halloween Happenings 2014

Abby, Johan, Shana, Chris at HH 2008Sussex County 4-H will host Halloween Happenings! at the Lindley G Cook 4-H Camp on Saturday, October 25th from 5-8 pm. Halloween Happenings! is a family fun event that will feature activities such as

  • face painting,
  • cider pressing,
  • trick-or-treat trail,
  • child friendly haunted hay rides,
  • pumpkin painting,

There is no charge for this event! (Donations are appreciated)
The 4-H camp is located at 100 Struble Road in Branchville (near the main entrance to Stokes State Forest, off of Route 206).
