2014 Bolen Scholarship Awarded

photo of Bolen family and Karleen PerigoCongratulations to Karleen Perigo, 4-H member in the Four Legged Friends rabbit/small animal club! The scholarship was announced prior to the 4-H Rabbit and Small Animal show at this year’s fair.

Anna Maria Bolen was a long-time 4-H clothing leader in Mercer County, NJ. She was a dedicated volunteer who shared her knowledge of sewing and design with her club members and the community.
The Anna Maria Bolen Scholarship seeks to acknowledge a Sussex County 4-H’er who has demonstrated excellence in leadership, helping others, community service and will be pursuing a career in the arts.
Karleen is pursuing a career in music arts and music composition at Sussex County Community College.

Somerset County 4-H Small Animal and Herpetology Show

picture of cavySomerset County 4-H will be hosting a small animal and herpetology show on Saturday, February 8th.

Doors open at 7:30 a.m. (entries in no later than 8:30 a.m.). Judging starts at 9:00 a.m.

Small animal entry fees:
$ 3.00 per animal, regardless of breed, type, class, or size
Checks only for all mailed entries
Made payable to: Somerset County Small Animal Clubs

Herpetology Entry Fees:
$5.00 per animal
Made payable to: Sidewinders Club c/o Tom Dietrich

Entries Are To Be Postmarked No Later Than Saturday January 29, 2014.

An additional $ 1.00 fee per animal will be charged for any entries postmarked after January 30. Postmark will determine late fee.

Register Early

Phone entries will not be accepted. Day of show entries will be accepted for a $1.00 extra per animal fee. Day of show entries must be in showroom and registered prior to 8:00 AM to be eligible to show animals. There will be a $ 1.00 fee for day of show substitutions. Substitution animals must be the same breed and class. All returned checks will be subject to bank fees.

Monmouth 4-H Rabbit Academy

rabbit wearing glassesThe Monmouth County 4-H Small Animal Advisory will be hosting a Rabbit Academy on Saturday, February 22 from 9:30 am to 1 pm at the Monmouth County Agricultural Building. The Academy will include educational sessions on:

  • Rabbit 101- Where to Begin? Basic Care of a Rabbit
  • Show Preparation- What Should I Bring to a Rabbit Show?
  • Building an Outdoor Rabbit Hutch- Guided Demonstration Showmanship- Learn How to Win Showmanship
  • Genetics- Solving the Mysteries of Breeding
  • Nutrition- What Kind Of Feed Should I Give My Rabbit? How Much?
  • Nest Boxes- Learn How to Make Your Own
  • Rabbit Judging- Experience How Rabbits Are Judged
  • Lion head Rabbit Presentation- All about This Breed

Entry Fees- $3 before 2/14 and $5 day of event

2014 Small Animal Educational Symposium

boy with rabbitWhat: The State 4-H Small Animal Educational Symposium hosted by the State 4-H Small Animal Project Advisory Council will provide an opportunity for 4-H members, leaders and parents to participate in a variety of educational events all in one day. Activities and events planned include: rabbit hopping contest, art show, avian bowl, animalology contest, writing workshop, reptile workshop, show etiquette workshop and poultry & rabbit showmanship workshops.

Who: This event is open to 4-H members in grades 4-13, 4-H leaders and parents who are involved in the rabbit, cavy, small animal, herpetology and poultry 4-H project areas.

When: Saturday, March 22, 2014 – 10:00 AM-3:30 PM

Where: Office of Government Services, Cooperative Extension/4-H Office, 1200 North Delsea Drive, Clayton Registration: The cost is $12.00 per person for youth (includes entry fees for the Rabbit Hopping, 4-H Avian Bowl or Animalology Contest and the 4-H Art Show as well as lunch, program supplies and awards) and $10.00 per adult. To register, please complete the State 4-H Small Animal Project Educational Symposium Registration Form and the 4-H Event Permission Form.
